Finding Calm in the Chaos: A CBT Approach to Managing Anxiety
If you're reading this, you've likely had those days where life feels a little too loud, a little too busy, and a lot too heavy. Maybe it's a persistent "what if" playing on loop in your mind. Perhaps it's that sudden, sharp tightness in your chest that tells you panic is knocking at the door.
In my practice here in Saint John, anxiety is one of the most common reasons people reach out. It is a thief. It steals your focus, your sleep, and your ability to be present in your own life. But here is the truth I want you to hold onto: all the answers you need live within you. Sometimes, you just need a safe space and the right tools to uncover them.
What is Anxiety, Really?
Anxiety is often our body's way of trying to protect us, but it is using an outdated map. It keeps us stuck in a cycle of "catastrophizing." This means expecting the worst-case scenario and believing we won't be able to handle it.
When we work together on my big green comfy couch (or virtually), we look at how those thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all tangled up together. This is where Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) comes in.
Breaking the Cycle with CBT
CBT is an evidence-based approach that helps us look at the "programming" of our thoughts. It isn't about "thinking happy thoughts." It is about thinking balanced thoughts.
Here is how we can use CBT to start regaining control:
Identify the "Thought Traps": We start by noticing the patterns. Are you jumping to conclusions? Are you "filtering" out all the good things and only seeing the risks? Once we name the trap, it loses some of its power over you.
Challenge the Narrative: I firmly believe that we have the power to rewrite our story. If your current story is "I'm not safe" or "I can't cope," we work to find the evidence for your strength and resilience.
Mindfulness and Grounding: Because anxiety lives in the future, we use mindfulness to bring you back to the "now." Whether it is a breathing exercise or simply noticing the world around you, these tools help settle your nervous system.
The Power of Self-Care and Meaning
As a mother who balanced a full-time career while completing university, I know firsthand that self-care isn't a luxury. It is a necessity for functioning as a human being. When anxiety takes over, self-care is often the first thing we sacrifice.
In our sessions, we don't just talk about the hard stuff. We integrate kindness, gratitude, and even a little humor. We look for ways to create meaning from your experiences. When you find meaning, you find a way through.
You Don't Have to Carry This Alone
If you feel like you've been running on empty or if your busy life has turned into a chaotic one, please know that it's okay to ask for help. Taking off your shoes, getting comfortable, and being heard in a nonjudgmental, safe environment is often the first step toward healing.
